Department of Energy Updates and the Impact on Commercial Properties

One Hour of CEU - Approved!

On Jan. 1, 2023, new minimum efficiency standards for air conditioners and heat pumps will go into effect across the United States. Federal standards for equipment efficiencies are implemented by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in accordance with the Energy Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA) of 1975. This is the first time since 2015 DOE is updating air conditioner and heat pump efficiency standards.

All new units will be required to meet the updated standards. Builders and HVAC contractors should be getting ready for the transition as equipment meeting older standards will be phased out.

Mark Godfrey, Director of Commercial Sales with Daikin, will discuss how units will be physically changing and how the manufacturer will be “getting there” for the new 2023 standard along with how the new efficiency standards could affect operating costs. He will also touch on how manufacturing will be migrating from just-in-time manufacturing and sole-sourced-parts procurement to dual or multi-sourced procurement which will help from an assembly and availability perspective for your properties.

Additionally, he will discuss the backlog of availability from the manufacturer’s standpoint and when the market will potentially get back to health again.
